1000 Watt Generators – Which To Look Out For

A generator that’s 1000 watts in size makes for a great little portable unit of power. With the majority of portable generators making somewhere between 2000 and 3000 watts of power, there are not quite as many 1000 watt generators available for purchase. This, however, does not mean to say that you shouldn’t consider one.

Even those portable generators that fall in the 2000 – 3000 watt power band can be quite heavy and bulky. A 1000 watt generator on the other hand will be very small and very portable. Some even come in a size that you can fit into a backpack.

Portable 100 watt generators come in all shapes, sizes, and variations. For example, there are petrol-powered 1000 watt generators, as well as even solar-powered variants. In this guide, we’ll take a quick look at some of those 1000 watt generators that we think are the best available, for a number of different reasons. For each product, we’ll examine the key features that we think are most useful to know on each generator, and we’ll make a recommendation towards the end of the guide on what we think is the best 1000 watt generator that you can buy, and for what reason.

Westinghouse iGen1200 Portable Generator – Our Top Pick

If you’ve ready any other guides that we’ve written here on Best Generators, you’ll know that we think very highly of Westinghouse products. Westinghouse was the first name in the generator industry, due to the fact that they discovered how power could be generated from the movement of an engine.

Ever since its revolutionary discovery, Westinghouse has been developing some of the finest generators on the market. The iGen1200 is a great display of this.

The iGen1200 has a peak power output of 1200 watts. That’s enough power to provide backup to the large majority of appliances around the home, in an RV, or when camping for example.

The engine in the iGen1200 is only 54cc in size, with 1.8bhp. Whilst this might not seem like all that much, it’s more than enough to provide 1200 watts of starting power. One of the main advantages of using an engine of this size is that it’s very efficient – it can run for up to 9 hours from a tiny 0.8 gallons of fuel.

Of course, one of the prime benefits of a generator that’s this size is portability. The iGen1200 weighs only 33 pounds, and being complete with its carry-handle is extremely easy to move from place to place.

Key Features

  • Maximum output of 1200 watts
  • Running output of 1000 watts
  • Very lightweight at just 35 pounds
  • Small and portable, yet powerful enough to act as a backup source to the majority of appliances
  • Very Quiet – the iGen1200 operates at only 52 decibels
  • Fuel-Efficient – this Westinghouse will run for 10 hours from only 0.8 gallons of fuel
  • Can be connected in parallel with another Westinghouse generator for maximum power output
  • Comes with a 3-year warranty
  • Both EPA and CARB compliant

Downsides

  • We couldn’t find any downsides on this generator!

Kyng Power Solar Generator – The Sun-Powered Option

This generator from Kyng power is solar-powered. Although a relatively new concept to arrive in the generator market, it should not be overlooked. Solar-powered generators are an environmentally-friendly, healthy way to get mobile power.

Obviously, this solar-powered generator works slightly differently from regular gas-powered generators. It uses a cable to attach to a solar panel, which then charges the battery within the generator.

This generator has a maximum output of 1000 watts, and a running output of 500 watts. It’s very easy to use and does not need to be charged by a solar panel. If you don’t have access to solar power, this Kyng Power unit can be charged from a car or wall socket too.

Key Features

  • Maximum of 1000 watts power output
  • Running power output of 500 watts
  • Can be charged if no solar power is available and therefore very easily recharged
  • A large selection of power outlets – three 110V, 4 DC 12V ports that are great for charging mobile devices
  • Large lithium ion battery
  • 18 month warranty period
  • Kyng Power’s customer service is very highly rated
  • Comes with a lot of extras in the box, including 3 different chargers and an adapter cable
  • Extremely lightweight – this Kyng Power unit weighs just over 8lbs. Yes, 8lbs!

Downsides

It has to be charged by conventional methods if there’s no solar power available. This does, sort of, defeat the purpose of having a solar-powered generator in the first place

DuroStar DS1050 – The Budget Pick

The DuroStar DS1050 is a very easy to carry little generator wherever you’re going. It’s got a maximum power output of 1050 watts, which is provided from its little 2bhp engine.

For an extremely cheap price of just over $100, this generator comes with a surprisingly good array of features that you might not have expected to see on such a modestly-priced unit.

The DS1050 is safe and has been fitted with a spark arrestor. This arrestor prevents the generator from emitting anything that could cause a fire hazard to the surrounding area. This makes it a great generator for camping.

It’s also fitted with an automatic low oil level detection and engine shutdown system. This ensures that should the engine oil level become too low, the engine is not damaged by being run.

The DS1050 has a running wattage of 950 watts from its 2 stroke engine. The starter has been designed by DuroStar to make sure that getting the engine into motion is as easy as possible, too.

Key Features

  • Very lightweight and portable
  • Maximum output of 1050 watts
  • Continuous output of 950 watts
  • Fitted with 120V Household Outlets
  • Fuel-Efficient – will run for up to 6 hours from just 1.06 gallons of fuel
  • Automatic low oil level detection and shutdown
  • Spark arrestor
  • 3-Year Warranty

Downsides

2-Stroke engine – oil must be added to the fuel mixture on fuelling to ensure that the engine is properly lubricated. 2-Stroke engines also don’t tend to run as smoothly as 4-stroke.

Conclusion

In terms of 1000 watt generators, our absolute favorite is the Westinghouse iGen1200. It’s powerful, and boasts some of the best build quality that’s available on the market. It’s very fairly priced too.

The Kyng Power Solar Generator is an interesting option indeed. It’s solar-powered, and therefore takes its energy from the sun. However, we did think the fact that this generator must be charged by normal means in the event that there was to be no solar power available was a bit disappointing.

The DuroStar DS1050 is a great little budget generator. Whilst it doesn’t have the build quality of the Westinghouse, it’s still a good generator that will serve you well.
